RPGs or RPs (Role Playing Games) are easy and fun text-based games that usually play out via MSN or Forums. They can contain an unlimited amount of players, or only a select few. While usually written in the third person 's/he' instead of the first-person 'I/we' so people know who the action is happening to and who they're talking to.
Example: Yami Bakura held an outcold Mokuba in his arms, "He's not dead, just unconscious."
Role playing is simple and fun, and mostly involves responding to a previous post.
Example: Seto leaned forward in his chair, "You sick twisted freak, leave my brother alone! Where are you?"
Pretty easy right? If ever you need some help, the best idea is to use the 'Help' Thread on the RPG Board.
On Starting And Joining RPGs
On starting an RP, make sure you have a storyline clearly in mind (and on paper too, just incase!). You should explain in the first post:
a) The Plot (What Should Happen In The RP) b) Characters Involved (Including if OCs are allowed. See Here: OC) c) Setting (Where & When The RP Takes Place) d) Rules Specific To The RP (How many Characters or OCs are allowed etc)
Explaining all this causes little confusion in who can join and what they can do. You may want to be strict with the Plot, as things can easily get out of hand and a storyline can be ruined by just one post. (Which of course, a Manager can delete if absolutely necessary.)
If you become interested in joining an RP, do not be discouraged by the high post count of many of them. Some RPers are looking for new players even late into the action. The courteous thing to do is to ask the RPG Starter if you can join, and you can also ask someone to post a summary of events in the RPG thus far to help get you caught up. I'm sure no one would mind, considering extra characters often increase the action. Most RPers would appreciate if you post a profile for each of your OCs (yes, usually you can play more than one). Even if you have posted your character profile on the OC List, please post it again in the specific RPG Thread. When you start RPs, you can ask others to do this as well. Mostly it's a simple matter of copying and pasting.
Some RPG Conventions
These are some conventions while role playing that I've seen used often. You don't have to use them, but doing so generally makes your posts easier to understand:
OoC: [out of character] When you want to tell the participants something, like when you'll be away and for how long.
IC: [in character] When you are role playing in character. Using IC declares that you are doing something that may affect the outcome of the RPG.
PoI: [point of interest] When you want to point something out, such as background information, that is relevant to the RPG, but not directly relelvant to the current action.
PoO: [point of order] For sticklers to rules like myself who feel compulsed to point out if something has been done poorly and could be corrected. The RPGs will not hinge on what is said in a Point of Order, and I ask that all those who fall victim to the Point of Order, as in a duel, respect the person's choice in using that instead of 'OOC' and move on.
When text is italicized between //, it usually indicates a thought on the part of a character.
Example: //What am I worried about? My Giant Trunade will wipe out all of his trap cards.//
When italicized text is found inside chevrons (< >), it usually indicates a charcter using telepathic abilities to communicate with another character, for example between Yami and Yugi:
Example: <Yugi, you must win the duel by yourself this time.>
Text can be colour-coded to avoid confusing which character is which and which is talking, and this doesn't just apply to RPers like myself who often play as 3 or more characters. It can be used also between RPers to reduce the amount of 's/he said' and other tags.
Example: None
When you see or use three asterisks (stars), each separated by a space, it usually indicates a separation in time or space or both, so to switch between Yugi outside Pegasus's castle to Kaiba inside the castle, I might do this:
Example: Yugi looked back up at the castle. "Thanks, Mai and Tea. Now nothing will stop us!"
* * *
"I can't let you get away with this, Pegasus. My brother's soul is at stake. Saggi, attack!"
RPG Rules And Conduct
In addition to Group and MSN rules of conduct, it is wise to follow a few simple rules, mostly common sense stuff that you may already do anyway.
1. Please be kind and courteous to all participants, and they will return your kindness and courtesy. 2. Please respect all participants and their decisions, so they can return that respect. 3. Please do not swear on any board. If you must, please substitute a letter for a symbol, for example, 'a$$.' (I also had an at sign, but it turned that into a hyperlink. That's never happened to me before. But speaking of links...) 4. Please, no advertisements and/or links on this or any other board. If you must post a link, do so in the Links section, and make sure that that site has a link back to this Group. If you do not follow this rule, you will be first warned, then banned. This is a Group rule that it seems, must be reiterated many times. 5. No cheap stuff. There is no such thing as the card that destroys all opponents monsters and takes all of their lifepoints. Same goes with 'Godly' OCs, everyone has a weakness. 6. Play fair, do not target other players just because of your personal thoughts of them. 8. Keep your cool. The RPG will run a lot more smoothly that way, and it'll be more fun. 9. Your character must be symbolic to the RPG, so in a Yugioh RP you probably shouldn't use a Vampire or a Dragon OC, or give every character a Millennium Item. 10. Your character must act and react realistically according to the RPG and his/her profile. Still try to reduce swearing, as doing so makes it impossible for some people to see the page due to filters. 11. Have a great time and enjoy yourself!
